Adventures in Personal Artificial Intelligence

One of the interesting aspects of our brains is the oscillations through our neurons. Neurons engage in oscillatory activity, both on the individual neuron level and in large groups. Several common oscillatory bands including the alpha band 7.5-12.5 kHz, the beta band 13-30 kHz, the delta band 1-4 kHz, and gamma bands 30-70 kHz have been identified. Higher frequencies seem to correlate to more cognitive activity, leading many to speculate that the oscillations are relating to cognition.

A research team at Kiel University has recently simulated artificial neurons synchronizing into oscillations. They used memistors as the basis of artificial neurons and succeded in getting the neurons to synchronize together. This may help us understand the mechanisms in our own brains.
